Women of the Exodus

The Israelites are enslaved in Egypt, a place where they once sought refuge from famine and drought is now a place of bitterness and hardships. Not only are the Israelites broken but they become victims of a national gendercide, which claims the lives of Hebrew baby boys. The situation is depressing, hope seems lost but then the first glimmer shines through as we are immediately introduced to two midwives who defy Pharoah’s royal edict. The narrative of heroines gains momentum and we are soon learning the names of six women who were an integral part of YHWH’s plan of redemption. They surrounded the man chosen to become Israel’s leader and they shone as lights in a dark place. They stood when others crumbled in despair, they rescued, fought bravely, defied orders and ultimately saved lives. Their actions speak to us, challenging us and inspiring us. This is their story…
